Ceramic Installation:  You Do It Or They Do It?

Often, questions are asked about ceramic installation.  Should you attempt to do this type of project on your own?  Ceramic tile is a great medium to use, and has plenty of applications within a home or business.  While some people may do well at installing ceramic tile themselves, the task is one that requires know how and skill.  Here are a few things to consider before you start a ceramic installation . . .

  • Surface:  The surface you are placing the ceramic tile on must be as flat as possible.  For example, in your bathroom renovation, you may want to place ceramic tiling throughout the shower.  If the walls are damaged, uneven, broken or otherwise not level, these repairs must be made before the project moves forward.
  • Installation:  A professional ceramic tile installer will finish the task in a matter of hours.  Yet, for the untrained person, it will take longer because installation requires skill.  If the tiles are not placed correctly, they’ll be unevenly lined.  Patterns can make the job even more difficult.  Most important, if there are any air pockets, any mistakes along the way, the tile could easily crack.

Ceramic installation also requires specific tools and equipment.  While easy to find, they can be costly investments.  The fact is, the amount of money you spend on having a professional do the ceramic installation for you are quickly returned to you by the lack of maintenance and long life of the tiling, when properly put in place.  Do take the time to get estimates or take a course to learn how to perfect your skills before you tackle a kitchen renovation or other task.
